Back Scratching Turtles

There are few things in this world that hold mystery, wonder and awe like our planets oceans. Covering 71% of the Earth’s surface, the worlds oceans also contain 99% of our planets living space. Our passion for diving the crystal clear waters surrounding the Cayman Islands is driven in part by the sheer vastness of biodiversity found near these small islands. Previously explored reefs revile new and exciting treasures on each and every consecutive dive. While it should be no surprise witnessing for the first time previously unseen behavior, it somehow always is. In my many years of diving, I have never had the privilege of witnessing a Hawksbill cleaning it’s shell.

Over time, Hawksbills build up algae on their shells. This build up can cause drag on the carapace, causing the turtle to expend more energy throughout their daily routine of foraging for sponges, jellyfish, and other food sources. Removing the algae is an important function of daily living as a turtle, and it probably feels good too!
